The following is entirely unofficial.

The UOM Harmonization project, from N3C, has the following components, focused on "analytes" (quantitaties that are measured, like "sodium")

• Information: Concept sets of OMOP codes referring to analytes that share the same UOM and basic semantics (all forms of "Sodium")
• Information/Knowledge: Effectively a table with multiple rows for each analyte, with one row for each unit of measure found in EHR datasets, along with the preferred unit of measure and the formula to convert that unit of measure for that analyte to the preferred UOM. This information is very transferable. (e.g., converting sodium mmoles/L to mg/dL)
• Information: For each analyte, distributions of values, across sites, for each UOM found in a dataset. This information is probably problematic, since it is based on data. But from a data storage perspective, not a technical problem
• Algorithm: A program that, for an analyte, takes a distribution of values with unknown UOM and assigns one, based on the distribution of values

Thus, there are both storage and interactive components.

Good information, thanks! The hardest part here for me is knowing where and how to get the data needed. Perhaps Siggie or you might know. Also I think I'll have a better idea as to what the end product will look like once I see the data, but I get the general idea here.
