Connected but no page load on laptop. #122

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. I have a rooted HTC Hero (G2).
2. Running the tethering app.
3.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
Expected to load a page. However does not load. No packets are transfered
from device to laptop.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Tried 1.51 and 0.97 - tried on XP and Vista 32bit

Please provide any additional information below.
Network is present and laptop and device show they are connected on a adhoc
network. However, no data is transfered. On 1.51, there was almost always
an upload speed however there was no download speed and so thus phone was
not downloading the webpage for the laptop.

Tried Bluetooth before with no success, no services found - but tried again
with your video guide to
ensure I didn't miss anything - but again no services found (just voice
gateway). BTW I'm on a mac but
Bluetooth pan has worked on another device.

I'm following the issue as well.. Got the same problem. Both wifi and BT
tethering
don't seem to work. In the meantime, thanks a lot for all the time you've put
in the
program!

No, no news from my side. I will put a new apk together (with a recompiled
dnsmasq-
binary) for testing later this evening. But ... to be honest I'm not very
confident.

Thanks for the continued effort with this harald, I'll certainly give this a go

know how it goes...

Ok ... try this one:
http://android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com/files/signed_andTether_1_52_test1.apk
(Uninstall the old version and install this one afterwards.)

I don't think that this will make any difference but give it a shot. dnsmasq
was not
stripped down (to save space) in this version.

Anyway ... If somebody lives in or near Vienna/Austria and is willing to let me
play
acround a bit (1 or 2 hours) with his/her rooted hero then please drop me
message.
Otherwise I have to say that I'm out of ideas at moment ...

I've uninstalled the previous version and installed this one - unfortunately as
you suspected I get the same
symptoms. I'll watch the thread to see if anyone takes you up on your offer!
Thanks again.

Yeah Harald I would love to help out, but the UK to Austria is a long haul.

Let me know if there is any code or logs you need from my Hero to help the
process
along.

Keep up the good work.

It might not be relevant, but if iptables are missing what about USB tethering?
Should
that work?

Original comment by pedersen...@gmail.com on 23 Aug 2009 at 10:14

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
USB tethering is already supported on the Hero using the included sync-software
on
windows. Not on Mac or Linux though.

Original comment by jimmy.shimizu on 23 Aug 2009 at 3:42

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
It works on linux as well, the hero uses an ndis interface witch has modules
for it in
the stock debian-kernel. My point is not whether or not usb-tehtering works (it
does),
but if that uses iptaples. But that might be difficult to know without the
source from
htc.

But, there is no way there is a driver that works on vista.. If someone got it
working, please give me that driver. Have been trying for a few hours now.

I have been struggling to get any hint on whats wrong with this, but I cant
even get
an IP from the DHCP at all.

Is it dnsmasq that takes care of the DHCP-leases?

I'm running OS X under mac as client, don't have a windows-machine with
wireless I
can test with.

Phone listens on both port 53 and 67 (UDP) for DNS and DHCP, but I can't see any
trace of it beeing able to access the phone (or recieve any answers atleast).

Not even with a static IP on the client I am unable to communicate with the
phone.
Got any suggestions that I can try?

Hm..
A little success! It can works. Have to, really.

Today in work I run tether wifi, but on some other application - aShareNet or
aShareWifi.. something like that.
And - network works, browser, pings, all it's ok. But! I can't download from
market.
Anything. Or use other google services (?!).
Now im in home, i've just tried connect with wifi-tether to do some test and
when i
try start im getting an error, something like: "mobile-data-connection not
found".
Yes yes, i still don't have any data-plan (so, no internet) on the phone. But i
just
wanna have wifi lan connection, then i can change route on phone, share network
on
notebook.. and will be great.;-)

I just checkouting sources, i will try to find where you setting this message,
comment it, compile(?!) and try to connect & compare configs, outputs from
route/
iptables/ip with data from this previous application which works..
Could you help me and tell how can i compile source to *.apk?

The user doesn't show up on the list, I've tried this with firewall (on a mac
and
linux laptop) on and off.

"route" isn't a recognized command in the andriode shell, I'll try the ping
stuff
when I get home tonight (no SDK on my work PC).

Your English is fine, I appreciate your help.

Please stay on topic here. I don't think that aNetshare is working on hero
devices. aNetshare is using the
same technique and guess what ... lot of features are identical. Now think
about it ... one tethering app
is opensoured the other one is completely closed source (but using and
distributing gpl-based software)
which one (do you think) has introduced those "features"?

Anyway ... if you can provide information or even a solution to this problem (i
don't own a hero) you are
very welcome to submit patches. We will even add a copyright-notice to the
source-code. But if you
want to discuss aNetshare related problems please don't do that here.

Thank you!

Oh, yes. Im sorry, you're right.

So, lets back to android-wifi-tether..
I just connected to my hero via adb shell, go into /data/local/bin, type
"./tether
start" - ok, looks fine. I added also routing (i don't have internet on hero
actually so i did reverse tethering..) to via my pc ip address. And works.
Almost-
because for example browser tell me that i don't have internet connection, but
when
i wait couple seconds under this error message i have new opened page.
Android checks in many places if he have set internet connection and that's all.

I have to rebuild tether and turn off mobile-data checking (as i said - i want
to do
it in reverse way). I will add then some really verbose logging into sdcard and
try
to find out this problem.

This isn't a problem with scripts/binaries/config, but with interface. If you
have
an idea what especially i should check- please let me know.

I did the same - works a treat! Note, it takes some time for the MAC to get
its DHCP and to connect, often a
second connection attempt helps. But I'm typing this to you on my MAC tethered
to my G2!!! Good job all!

Great and simple guide here http://Android.MoDaCo.com/ - note I backed-up but
didn't wipe and all appears
well so far. 218kb UP and 745kb DOWN - that's good to see.

Harald - now Tethers doing what it should it's a great app - Hero soft keyboard
is fixed from earlier so I can
change SSID etc.. I'll be donating now I'm able to use ;-) (due to whatever fix
is in the ROM I've just applied)

Sweeeeeeeet

o.. WOW!

Yup after a quick test of the HSDPA speeds will surely donate :)

Yep @peter on a mac too, was a bit worried when airport was still orange as it
couldnt obtain ip! but patience
is a virtue.. also typing this on a macbook pro tethered to G2

was a bit worried because after the modaco install it took literally ages to
get off the "htc" boot screen. To the
point where I had to run nandroid backup and try again, but second time lucky -
waited longer probably..

I followed:
http://android.modaco.com/content/htc-hero-hero-modaco-com/292018/26-08-1-1-moda
co-custom-hero-rom-is-here/
Made a backup (which I didn't need). The new rom came back up with *all* my
settings/preferences intact. The only problem I've noticed is the google maps
icon
has dissapeared (the application is still there but no icon). I'm sure we can
agree
that this is a small price to pay =)

It would be interesting to see exactly how this new rom differs from the Hero
stock rom.

It's working perfectly for me. The only thing I had to do was remove WIFI Tether
before installing the custom rom and enable debug mode (usb connection).
Conclusion: for me, the problem is fixed, woohoo! :)

I know this looks like off topic, but relevant for folks considering the Rom
update to get tether working.
Google Maps might have more of a problem than missing icon...mine force closes
whenever I try a
search. Anyone else?

Original comment by peter.w....@gmail.com on 27 Aug 2009 at 7:45

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
Affirmative. I had that problem at first too. That is the disadvantage when not
cleaning your phone: you have to be careful updating certain things. Apparently
Google Maps uses certain file systems to register, so you have to remove Maps
before
updating. That did it for me. So my suggestion: set back your backup (which I'm
sure
you have made), remove Google Maps (and Wifi Tether) and update again. After
that
install GMaps again and your up and running again.

And better: Wifi Tether works ;)

Ps. If it still hangs/stops, remove it again and also empty your 'Google Apps'
app.
Good luck!

Prior to posting the msg, I reinstalled maps from the market but still had the
force
close on search - without wanted to resort to restore and repeat all steps
etc... I
uninstalled maps from Applicaions then again reinstalled from the Market and
now all
appears OK. Slight panic, but it's over... appears this is still the way to go
-
especially as I spent an hour on the train this morning fully tethered and
browsed
my way to work ;-)

Uninstalling and reinstalling (you may need to clear the market cache) does
indeed
fix the issue for me.

I can confirm the Google Maps behaviour. I uninstalled it and a copy of
wifi-tether
which was already on the phone (and not working) before putting the modaco ROM
on the
Hero, which I _didn't_ wipe. Maps force closed the first time I installed it
from the
market, but removing it and re-installing seems to have made it happy.

Most importantly, wifi tethering now works too as reported in previous
comments.

Anyone has any hint on if the magical fix of the netfilter-problem was an
official
fix from HTC in the new ROM, or if modaco actually did something to make it
work?

I'm kind of balancing on whether to wait for the offical update or go with the
custom. But I'm afraid that I will loose the word-suggestions for nordic
(swedish)
words if I install the custom.

Hello All!
Sorry for my poor English. I read all the posts very carefully twice, and do
test
between wifi tether and build-in usb modem share. I use original HTC HERO ROM. I
replicate all the symptoms in these posts include ever get ping reply from
client to
Hero and vice versa like tom.oxton. I think the ping reply is no reference
value and
is accidental.

I found an interesting symptom might help.
My environment for example:
Internet DNS: 168.95.1.1
rmnet0 IP: 10.0.0.10
tiwlan0 IP: 192.168.1.254
client IP: 192.168.1.103

All following test are in adb shell and wifi-tether is started.
I can ping Internet DNS and get reply either following commmand:
ping -c 1 168.95.1.1
ping -c 1 -I rmnet0 168.95.1.1

But ping to client:
ping -c 1 192.168.1.103, I get no response.
ping -c 1 -I tiwlan0 192.168.1.103, I can get all response without packet loss.
So I think packets which go to 192.168.1.0/24 doesn't go through the correct
interface.
But I check out the route and found it's correct.
# ip route
ip route
10.13.16.216/30 dev rmnet0 proto kernel scope link src 10.13.16.217
192.168.1.0/24 dev tiwlan0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.254
default via 10.13.16.218 dev rmnet0

When I use HTC USB Modem share, ping works fine without specify interface.

Hope these information gives help.
Sorry for my poor English again.
