Is the reset communication from the GUI to the medullas dependent on the
current software architecture?
Do the medullas already have a means to restart?

The medullas them selves can be reset by sending the stop and then init
commands over then ethercat bus. In the current software architecture the
kernel module does not have a way of recovering from an error state. That
shouldn't be that difficult to change, a new data field will need to be defined
in the communication between the GUI and the controller wrapper to send the
reset command and the kernel module will need to be modified so that it can
reset it's state machine and thus the medullas when it receives that command.
