Make & include Help videos #107

Jim, we need your help to write the help manual and once this is written then we can do the video. If you could please think of some pointers , for e.g. different topics and I would think of some and then lets discuss it together. Shall we book a date sometime next week to meet and discuss these?

Three topics have been on the app Help screen from the start. As well as these I'd suggest:

How to play videos How to restart the app How to navigate through the app Fixing problems

I'm sure we can all add more to the list. Let's have more of a think & get more ideas down here before any meeting.

A problem is that I don't know how much the couples will know about using a tablet beforehand. If they know nothing then we should show them / point them to the basic guide to using the tablet (written by Samsung)

Comment on Reena's Help video.mov, Help video transcript.docx on DropBox

Promising - shows you can make the Help videos this way and they can be useful.

General points / questions to start

  1. Where is this video intended to go?
  2. Do you intend it to be split? If so, what are the sections?
  3. You describe how to start the app. If they are already in the app then they must have started it already
  4. Your video has frame width 396, height 696. The video space on the app has frame width 664, height 498.
  5. Your video is .mov - if you can create .webm (codec as spec) then will save another job

Here's what I think would work best:

1) A Get started video describing how to get help on specific topics 2) A number of short videos on specific topics as already exist on the Help page drop-down plus those I suggested above

The button How do we use it? on the Guide Introduction page opens the Help screen with the Get started video selected

A few other points from Reena's trial Help video:

  1. You are using an old version of the app - always use the latest
  2. In the How to Play videos you can describe how to show / hide the video control bar
  3. In the How to Fix problems you can say that if the video control bar doesn’t show and / or video won’t play, leave the screen, then return and try to play it again.

I can create videos using SideSync to mirror tablet screen onto PC then record the window on PC using Cam Studio. This gives an avi container. Can then convert to webm using ffmpeg default webm codecs. Gives a video dimension 408 712 (w h) - see if this will fit full size onto Help screen if it's redesigned. Will need to amend video code as all other videos are 664 498 (w h)

Adjusting video codes, does that mean you have to go back to every individual video within the app.

No, I don't have to do that. I need to convert the videos I record from the screen into a webm container & codecs. I've already had to do that for many videos anyway so have all the tools. I will have to rearrange the Help screen since the videos of the tablet will be portrait whereas all the other videos in the app are landscape.

Were you able to use the video (trail help) that I sent without having to alter the video codes.

The trial help video you produced was in a mov container so would have needed converting but I'm not going to use it directly anyway.

If s, I suggest, that either you use my laptop for recording or pass on the script to me and I will record it or can do it in the office tomorrow or Monday.

I think it's probably best if I produce them.

I've produced 16 or so short help videos for _en & modified the Help screen & How do we use it? screen to use them. All videos & latest _en version of app are shared on DropBox.
