Display:

• Atmega based proportional controller, connected to this display for setting temperatures and connecting with wireless actuators.
• Actuators could control boiler power (via a servo on the boiler knob) and link via nRF24 modules. Temperature sensor could go wherever, wireless or on controller itself.
• Boiler gain adjusted, more power the further away from set point.
• Controller is either on for 30mins or off, with a set temperature. Computer can start the controller and choose temperature via RS-232 or bluetooth. Also monitor everything.
• Cron used to schedule heat, very easily.

Raw does require quite a bit of I/O but is cheap.

The long one for £5 would be awesome actually with 16 digits. You could display so much:

• Temperature in different zones
• Gain
• Set point
• Time
• Time left
