MISC: Please update the Qiqqa entry in wikipedia- It is creating a terrible impression about the software! #255

The wikipedia states that Qiqqa stopped updating 4 years ago. Further, it says that Qiqqa license is proprietary, and not open source.

This is a deadly combination: No one will use a proprietary product that was not updated for 4 long years.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_reference_management_software https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qiqqa

Note that a reference manager is a peculiar product: Each year, a large number of researchers/students start using a reference manager. Thus the user base is supposed to swell dramatically at the start of the academic year each year.

The users always face a dilemma about which products suits them best. They would rely on Wikipedia to compare the options, and choose a reference manager.

So if the Wikipedia contains faulty information, it would do a lot of harm to the project:

Is there any reason to suffer this slow decline??

Suggestion:

  1. Please update the table at Wikipedia:
The proprietary version was discontinued in xxxx,
An open-source Qiqqa is launched in yyyy.
  2. Please update Wikipedia table with the latest version (currently v82.0.7568-29227 AKA v82pre11).
  3. Please update the manual with strong, enthusiastic advocacy about why a new student should choose Qiqqa over the other reference managers. At present, it is a bland document with take-it-or-leave-it approach. Compare it with this spirited comparison made by the author of Docear. Ironically, Docear seems to be abandoned eventually.

BTW I am totally confused between the two concurrent branches: GerHobbelt and JimmeJardine. There are two different versions listed at both places. The GerHobbelt version seems to be the latest. Then why is an earlier tag on offer at JimmeJardine??

If there is a good justification for this strange arrangement, an explanatory text is needed at both places, and there should be a link to the other page, so that the user can select the proper version he wants/needs.

I would like to volunteer to make the help manual. But I will need to have a good chat with a developer to understand some queries.

I haven't edited Wikipedia, but can create text that can be placed on specific pages. I have a good idea what to edit there.

Would appreciate the help there! 👍

Re chat: My presence is quite random until the weekend at least, but if you're okay with a chat then, we might be able to work something out. I'm in the Amsterdam (GMT+2) timezone to give you a bit of an idea. Got Zoom and WhatsApp ATM, others are an option. Voice is faster than typing for this.

I am in Bangalore (India), 3.5 hours ahead of your time. I actually prefer voice chat (WhatsApp? Google meet?) You have my email ID, so can you send me a mail directly to set a date? Thanks in advance!
