Drawing rectangles or other shapes is usually a waste of time in a meeting where you are trying to explain something. Zooming in and out is a wonderful tool to steer attention. Much better than a laser pointer. You still need the laser pointer. The laser pointer needs a point when standing still. Not being able to stop is an unnecessary distraction for the speaker.
What problem are you trying to solve?
I've been using Whiteboardsoftware for several years now for remote 1 on 1 tutoring. I've got thousands of hours of experience. Mostly doing it for math. May general takeaway is that you need reduced functionality which is very well implemented from UI/UX POV. For example: Since you are performing live in front of another person you want every needed function to be accesable in as little actions as possible.
