I don't think it's a "weird" choice, maybe everyone loses if software aren't free, also see #1.

Your project was useful as a means to learn how status notifier and dbus work for which I am grateful. I like Free Software, best of luck.
I respect your choice of license but in my opinion it is a weird one for a library that should promote interoperability .. what if someone wants to make their non-GPL software compatible with KDE (or other DE)? It's KDE (or other DE) users that lose if the vendor finds system tray too hard and not able to use your library. Anyway, thanks for publishing this little tool. I hope I can learn from it. :)
