Through my experience with the bme280 sensors, we can add a 1mm JST connector (commonly known as Quiic Connect from Sparkfun or STEMMA QT from Adafuit. There's also a standard 2mm JST connect that's used by some Adafruit products as STEMMA and Seeedstudio as Grove. We can easily crimp a 1mm to 2mm JST or have it breakout into jumper wires. Thinking about adding multiple terminals to make it easier to add multiple devices.
Found part number for JST connector: https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/jst-sales-america-inc/SM04B-SRSS-TB/926710
Unsure exactly what this would look like, but eventually we will need a way to add new novel sensors to the device. It could be something as simple as adding pins for the I2C lines. Open to ideas.
