I might be wrong, but maybe it seems unusual to reference the same footnote more than once in a document?

it may be unusual, but when the time comes it allows for less redundancy in the text and therefore more clarity. I've used this quite a few times on my website and it helps put things in context (ie. "measured with method A, consisting of ...")
in such cases in particular, it must be noted that it is undesirable to change the reference of the footnote : numbering them so they are in order in text may look neater (first 1, then 2, then 3 and so on) but keeping the ref intact as it was in the source can really help if footnotes are "recycled" (reused) throughout the text : then the reader knows instantly if they've already come across that footnote or not. it must be noted that even printed documents are not always read linearly from start to finish.
