Improve function level documentation #5

the function documentation/roxygen is rather basic. needs improvement and addition of examples and more details where appropriate.

Progress was made on this prior to release of v0.2.1 (700c071d8870ba013aee3c19138c9f21074e7337).

Still work to do re: adding examples and looking for improvements to existing descriptions.
