VSAS species list #35

Emma provided the following by email 15/11/2023:

Please find attached an updated spreadsheet with all of the options for the app, include a new tab called ‘species dropdowns’ which details the groupings we would like on the observation form. For example, user selects ‘gulls’ from first drop down and the corresponding list of gull species appears in the second dropdown.

I have provided the ESAS codes for each species (where possible, a few don’t have one) and it would be great if the app could record the ESAS codes in the background so that the data which the app spits out is in ESAS codes, rather than species name.

I wonder whether we need to revisit this, in the light of earlier discussion. Aside from having a single searchable list favoured by two volunteers, should we consider pulling all unidentified spp into the relevant group?

I think it would also be good to decide how to approach the single searchable list thing, as it seemed to divide opinion - by gender, strangely, though sample size was too small to draw conclusions! Claire's wondering whether we can present the full searchable list if no group is selected, which would give the best of both worlds but will be challenging to configure.

NB: if we go down the species code route, using BTO codes, we will need a list of codes for the species covered by VSAS.

Tim mentioned that lists were prioritised by how common they were so need to display as listed (moved to issue #54)

I can add BTO codes to the end of species common name so that both are searchable e.g. 'Gannet (GX)' and update the spreadsheet to show this.

Sorry, I am aware that there are now several versions of this spreadsheet within GitHub. Once I've updated it again with BTO codes, I will try to go around and remove the old versions to avoid confusion!

I found most of the BTO codes so have included them but there are a couple of species that don't have a code. Anthony mentioned that there are BTO codes for generic spp. but I couldn't find them.

I'm just waiting on Anthony sending me these and I will then upload the updated spreadsheet!
