The article I read talked about how they are using machine learning to help predict how the stock market behaves. I found this interesting as it is an intersection between my finance and computer science major. The article talks about how researchers at Cornell are using datasets with millions of data points to help construct a random forest machine-learning algorithm. It is interesting to hear why they are doing a random forest though. Machine learning algorithms have been used in finance for a long time, but they are more of a black box, and no one knows what is really happening when the algorithm is making a prediction. However, in this research, the people conducting the research have an idea on what factors make stocks go up and down and by using the random forest they believe it helps shine a light on the area that they think might have the biggest impact on what makes markets move and how other markets affect certain markets.
