Opens my Chrome browser to local file showing html file:///home/ian/.cache/kioexec/krun/139306_0/unnamed

What does this mean?

oziau commented 2 years ago

Well when I click on the prompt that says that it is going to authenticate, my Chrome browser opens to this file URL (html of what appears to be the authentication page).

I have shut down my PC today so will send a screen shot tomorrow. I have tried my Unix (Ubuntu) and windows 10.

Thankyou

Ian

Can you please try right-clicking the app and see if any errors show up in the console log there? Thanks!

oziau commented 2 years ago

I resolved this issue by uninstalling join associated app, and browser extension. Reinstalled all and resolved.

oziau commented 2 years ago

Now I have the issue of devices not holding custom names. They revert back to Chrome. I am addressing this issue via twitter so please disregard this here.

I dont even have the browser extension installed and it still dont work, installation never finish.

@ ian-rmit: what do you mean with "by uninstalling join associated app" what app is that ?

Nolan

joaomgcd commented 2 years ago

@NolanNolan can you clarify what you mean by "installation never finish"? What exactly happens on your screen when you try?

NolanNolan commented 2 years ago

the application has a spinning icon at the top right corner - it never finishes and hence the app cant install

joaomgcd commented 2 years ago

Can you please try right-clicking the app and see if any errors show up in the console log there? Thanks!

Seems like something on your PC/network is preventing the app from contacting the Google server... Do you know what it might be?

NolanNolan commented 2 years ago

No

I tried everthing:

  1. using a mobile connectin instead of LAN
  2. Uninstalling Kaspersky
  3. Install as admin
  4. Tried 3 different PCs 2 with windows 10 1 with windows 11
  5. Setting xhrome instead of edge as standard browser opening google login

Ither users must have similar difficulties ?

Can this be the reason?

I had an issue with "Join on the Web" which may relate to this one..... I have a Samsung GalaxyBook Pro on Windows 11. When I tried logging in to Join on the web (https://joinjoaomgcd.appspot.com/). It get stuck on https://imgur.com/a/UBnhRxU . I have turned on both cookies and pop ups to no avail. Also, the same problem occurs in both Edge and Chrome. But it does not happen on Note 10 plus browser

I feel this error is the same one preventing me from using the Join Desktop (Not Window Store) app, because the desktop app requires authentication through a browser. Thank you

I have tried allowing all these to no prevail. I give up now.

I hope the developed wil lmake an update to the app to make this desktop application possible to install eg another way of authentication or...

thanks

jgcrowder commented 2 years ago

I had all notifications turned off in my Chrome browser and this prevented it from working correctly. The first time I installed Join for desktop, it opened my Chrome browser and allowed me to login. The browser displayed a message saying that notifications must be turned on for the desktop app to work correctly. I ignored that message and that caused the Join desktop app from loading.. it just sat there spinning. Once I turned on notifications (and allowed popups) and reinstalled Join for desktop again, it worked correct afterwards.

joaomgcd commented 2 years ago

@oluwadiya can you please try what @jgcrowder said? :)

NolanNolan commented 2 years ago

I just changed standard browser to chrome, allowed notification, third part cookies and popups. Still dont work. I give up, it needs attention from the developer to solve this i am afraid.

thanks

Nolan

oluwadiya commented 2 years ago

I agree I did all that as well

I have tried it. I allowed all popups and cookies. It didn't work. Then I tried it selectively for https://joinjoaomgcd.appspot.com/ and still it didn't work. I even tried it in Edge, all to no avail.....

I will be contented with the Microsoft Store App (Which I paid for) and the Chrome Extension. It just feels that the Deskstop App has more functionality Thank you

NolanNolan commented 2 years ago

I can confirm that. I tried all the suggested steps. No solution. As said. I think we need a solution from developer / updating the app

I have also paid for the windows store version but would also like to use the desktop application instead

thanks Nolan

joaomgcd commented 2 years ago

I'm trying my best to figure out the problem but without being able to replicate it, it's really hard to tell what the problem is :( I'll keep trying to figure it out, thanks

NolanNolan commented 2 years ago

But why not simply update the dektop application with the same code as used in the Join Windows store version (this version works fine regarding installation)?

Thanks Nolan

joaomgcd commented 2 years ago

Because they're using completely different technologies to be built. I can't simply reuse the code from one in another unfortunately...

joaomgcd commented 2 years ago

Sorry for no updates but do the directions here maybe help? https://www.reddit.com/r/JoinApp/comments/sjnli0/fix_for_joindesktop_in_windows/

NolanNolan commented 2 years ago

Hi

i tried this and still no solution. Maybe others will test too ?

regards Nolan

len-ny commented 2 years ago

For my case, when the application is spinning I have to login joinjoaomgcd.appspot.com in web browser with google account. Then only the application start to work.

NolanNolan commented 2 years ago

I also did that to no solution. Its very frustrating and annoying - and a shame - that this simply dont work. Developer: Please solve this now.

When i turn on VPN it seems to be possible to install, however that must still be a bug in the application because the windows store version works.

The desktop application seems identical with the browser version however.

Allowing it to register as a device by initially changing the default browser to chromium solved this issue for me.

NolanNolan commented 2 years ago

Hi I made it work but receiving photos in SMS don’t popup join desktop application, this only works if its only text

Try setting your default browser to chromium and initially logging in with it to registered as a device.

I'm pretty sure it's an issue with google, and maybe something about it being electron based or the browser. Anything third party for a google login seems to get blocked even when enabling less secure applications. Brave being chromium based also has this issue. If using Brave, after the login app prompts for login and is signed into the browser, you can actually connect to other devices with localhost ect but cannot recieve anything or let you send anything back to the desktop application to authorize it. For some reason though it will work using plain chromium. After authenticating and setting up a name for joindesktop there seems to be no issues and can then be used without it.

When using linux on multiple different distros, gpus, and the different builds, .appimage, .deb and versions from packagemanagers and from my experience it seems they all need to be executed with the --no-sandbox flag to work properly.
