What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. Freezing or removing the Stock Android Messaging app from the phone

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
SMSdroid doesn't receive any SMS or MMS anymore unless the Messaging app is 
reinstalled. SMSdroid should be able to replace the functionality of the stock 
Messaging app if it isn't installed.

What version of the product are you using? "Last" is not appropriate. 
SMSdroid 1.1.7 (and WebSMS 4.2.6)

Make sure you tell at least which app you are using. On what operating system?
Cyanogenmod 7.2, Android 2.3.7

Please provide any additional information below.

this is like any other sms reader: the database handling for incoming messages 
is done by android. smsdroid is just showing the messages.
to get rid of the notifications, just disable them in the stock app.
