Manual Logging (and logging upgrade)

The logging is currently a simple string.

It would be nice to be able to improve logging so that:

• I could switch it off when I was exploring
• It recorded as data, so we could know how much time actions normally took.
• I could write manual parts to it.

However, this is relitively low priority.
