8/5/19 CEC - I checked with PB about this, and he said the exception is meant for a building that is entirely ‘Data Center’, rather than a building that contains a ‘Computer Room’:

If it truly is a Data Center building, then perhaps they could show compliance prescriptively, or if we really wanted to help, they could run it with the Mandatory Checks off and send you the AnalysisResults.xml and remove the water mark..just a thought.

8/5/19 RH - If we decide to move forward with rule changes that will allow data centers to be exempt from the mandatory U-factor rules, then we will need to define a data center. This might include allowing only a subset of space types in the building and that no more than X% of the floor area can be spaces other than Computer Room. For example, if the building includes retail, it is not a data center. Including some office, corridor, restroom, etc. is likely OK. The standards include one criterion already – process load > 750 kW.

I don’t think we need to deal with this immediately, but I think we probably want to add rules like this at some point in the future.

8/5/19 CEC - Yes, I agree. Maybe I can have PB look into what determines a building is a Data Center, just like you described, and maybe they have a X% floor area that would help us in determining that threshold.
