Waveshare USB / ETH hub hat not supported on Banana-Pi M2 Zero Bookworm #16

Trying to use the Waveshare ETH/USB hat (the version that uses a dual micro USB connector NOT pogo pins) with the 10-10-22 img, but connected keyboards or wireless key/mouse dongles don't work - whereas a cheap USB hub connected with an OTG adapter works fine with devices. Is it related to the RTL8152 USB Ethernet on this hub?

I've tested with an Armbian image and that doesn't work either - so may be a red herring.
