Ruler's info #174

Hi Johan!

Many thanks for creating and maintaining this user friendly tool!

I want to buy the Pro license (to support your work) and extend my preferred monospaced font with some ligatures.

I want to use the ruler to see the current width of the whole character "block". However, I don't see where I can find the width of the ruler. image

For now, I created this ligature, but the correct width was done based on a trial-and-error manner. image

The result is pretty satisfactory, but feels like simple luck. image

And right after submitting this, I found the answer, simply by mistake!

By the way, I still believe that a short tutorial about Ruler would help, even that now it looks very simple to use.

Prior to submitting this issue, I searched for a guide/tutorial and in the existing (open or closed) issue, but I couldn't find the answer.

Thanks. Yes. You should see some measurement if you pass through both the rsb and lsb lines.

Moving on, I adjusted the width of the ligature as 114 (57+57):

ligature's space width singular character's space width

As previously pasted, the result seemed fine, but its space width wasn't the right one.

However, now with all set, the new result seems a little bit wider:

Am I missing something?

Thanks again for the feedback!

My bad! Apparently, x and q options (to use the x axis and snap to guides) weren't both applied. And the width is 55, not 57. Sorry for not using yet the proper terminology.

the correct space width of the singular character and now the (correct) result of the ligature's space width

The other lesson learned - thus I really think that a short tutorial on Ruler would help (if you want, I can contribute by writing it) - is that you need to have the whole grid shown, so that "snap to guides" (aka q key) option of the ruler to be effective.

Moving on with the purchase and the journey to add other ligatures.

Thanks. If you do want to write the tutorial please do so. I will create one if you don't have time for that.
