Merge with Synergy #9

Since the Synergy project is much more advanced and multiplateform, it would be nice to merge both software into one since your UI seems cool.

We could sure do with the expertise of the Teleport guys! :+1:

Wow the developer of synergy himself!!!

Synergy has an awesome roadmap: https://github.com/synergy/synergy/labels/priority-future

timmerk commented 9 years ago

This doesn't even make sense. That's like saying "Merge Windows and Mac OS X". Synergy is cross-platform, with a cross-platform GUI, and Teleport is currently a Mac only app, written in Objective-C against the Cocoa framework. The GUI config code would have to be rewritten 100% to work with Synergy, and the protocols are different, so there really is no point in this.

MartinDelille commented 9 years ago

As you want, but think about it because teleport has a great UI but is barely functionnal. Synergy is multiplateform that make it a definitely must have. And there is not just Apple in the life ;-)

I wouldn't call Synergy better because it still has trouble getting the basics right (sharing keyboard and mouse: under Linux I couldn't even manage to get it to start on system boot / user auto login and connecting to the server so I always had to connect a mouse to manually start it; with OS X the keymappings where completely wrong for more than 2 years and they didn't even bother to fix it).

I don't care about an awesome roadmap if it just won't work as it should. It would make more sense to make Teleport cross platform as it seems to be the better product (and I know that making it cross platform would probably require many parts of it to be completely rewritten so I doubt this will happen)

nbolton commented 7 years ago

@macgeneral We're working on the keymappings as we speak! :) Have you tried the latest versions? As I mentioned in #34, I've raised a ticket for you and I'm totally happy to refund you. You're absolutely right about the roadmap, first we need to get it stable!

I like Synergy a lot (having used it between Linux and macOS and paid license). I tried a recent experiment between MBA, iMac and Surface Pro. The setup (eventually) worked (only without SSL!) but the latency of switching and mouse tracking made it a no-go.

For macOS-macOS, its clunkier switch and mouse tracking is not palatable compared to teleport.

The latest release v1.2.2 is working on macOS Big Sur. Give it a try, if you have any problems please open an issue with full steps to reproduce.

As for merging with Synergy, that's highly unlikely to happen but I'm happy to report that I'll be reviewing PRs from anyone who wants to contribute to making Teleport better.

I tried Synergy years ago and it didn't meet my needs. Teleport works just fine for me now that it's running on Big Sur.
