Presuming you are not already doing this… Foliate could use this CSS filter trick (lower brightness, higher contrast?) for images in book contents when using the dark theme mode. It would help reduce glare when scrolling through text that has high-key (bright) photos, at night.
This style rule could be applied at least when the images are not hovered by the mouse.

Essentially, I'm suggesting the same thing as what was implemented in Epiphany, in Tuba and in Firefox ;)
