front-page idea: just have a photo of me and a brief description (obviously including the header.html and footer.html like nearly every page — using Jekyll include statements). I can have at the bottom of the description (in a separate paragraph): "Looking for a software developer? Check out my skills and projects!" (have links to those pages once created).
