Contenttype is used in enveloping.
this seems not to be useful.

I set contenttype on outgoing emails. eg. 'application/pdf'

yes, contenttype will still be used.
what was doen in enveloping was that messages with different contenttypes
would always be in different envelopes,
the same way as messages with different messagetype will always end up in
different envelopes.
what i will check: contenttype of envelope should be the same as for
message.

Not possible in a sensible way.
if I leave this out of enveloping criteria, still have to query this later on. 
just not worth doing.
