Fixed, but the correct symbol to use instead of a space was "-" after all. Confirmed that the live GitHub pages site requires "-" (dash), whereas jekyll looks for "_" (underscore) by default, and neither one works with the other.
A number of the internal links on the gh-pages web site are broken. It looks like the links to the section headings, and only those where the section heading contains spaces. I think the spaces are now replaced by

instead of_
, so[Track Options](#track_options)
should become[Track Options](#track-options)
.
