Replace wall switch for garbage disposal #111

This wall switch is not making contact consistently.

Steps to fix:

  1. Purchase a white 20-amp switch. It can't be a 15A switch. If there were some kind of momentary switch--where you have to hold it while the disposal runs--that's white and fits in the space we have (or with an alternative faceplate), then that might be better than an identical replacement.
  2. Turn off the breaker marked "DISPOSAL" in the boys room.
  3. Replace the switch with the new one.
  4. Turn the switch off.
  5. Turn the breaker back on.
  6. Test it out.
  7. Clean up your tools to remove any evidence that you made the repair.

WORKAROUND: Until it's fixed, a workaround is to push the switch up and then push it up some more, holding it there while it runs.
