Repair outdoor power outlets #85

Problem

There is no power to this outlet: image

Because the outlets are run in series, the outlets in the driveway island are also not working.

Steps to Investigate

I don't know what's wrong, but here are some steps you can take to help narrow it down.

1. Shut off the power

First, while the power is ON, test to see what it looks like on a meter when it's on. You can use a 120v meter (ask Dada where one is), and put the leads into the two A/C slots of an outlet at this working box: image

You should see about 110 to 120 volts of A/C at this outlet.

Second, turn the power off at this breaker: image

Be careful to hold the base of the breaker in place while you flip the switch off, because sometimes the breakers themselves are kind of loose in the box.

Lastly, test at the same good box again to confirm that you no longer read any A/C voltage as you were before.

2. Remove the cover of the not-working junction box

Now go to the one that is not working, and with the power safely OFF you can remove the front cover to expose the wires within.

3. Try to solve the mystery

There's no clear map for this part, but you can usually narrow things down to solve the mystery. Some ideas:

  1. Are there any wires obviously not connected that look like they were meant to be connected? There will be 3 wires coming from the other box, white, black, and unshielded or green, plus a fourth pink/red wire we're not using yet.
  2. Do we have power coming into this box? To test this, you can (a) expose the wires coming from the other box by removing the twist caps, (b) with these wires not sitting on any conductors, turn the power back on at the breaker, and (c) use the meter to see if 110-120 volts are being supplied across those two wires (black and white).

Then consult with Dada about what you've found to discuss possible solutions.

If we have power to this box, we'll have to see if something can be connected that wasn't before. If there's no power to this box, we'll have to take apart the box that's working (while the power is OFF) to see if something is disconnected there.
