One more thing, I'm pretty sure I used the right slot before loading the state.
@nicckog2000 The warning message "machine type mismatch" means that you were previously using a different machine type (e.g. cga, ega, vga_only, pc98, etc) when saving the state, instead of the machine type you are currently using when loading the state. Please make sure you start DOSBox-X with the same machine type when you load this saved state as you did when you saved the state, or it will not work. Hope this helps.
I have this problem without making any change in the machine type. Even if I try to load a saved state during the same game in which I saved that state some minutes before (so without closing the game or Dosbox-x), I get the message "machine type mismatch", but in this case (I mean without closing DOSbox-x) It works and It's possible to load the state. The problem comes when I close DOSbox-x and then I open it again, so I've to mount drives C an D (cd) again to play the game, when I finally open the game, if I try to load saved states, I get the message I wrote before, and in this case Dosbox-x freezes or directly closes. Thanks anyway for your answer!
Same issue, but not playing XCOM. My dosbox.conf is elementary - this looks like a bug.
Happy to share more info if helpful. Upon loading back the state after exiting and restarting, I get a segfault.
Same problem here. Even when no program is running, clicking save and immediately load without restarting or anything else. Saving the state of Syndicate Plus and loading again also leads to scrambled graphics but this probably a different problem. Version 0.81.11 from master on Raspberry Pi 400.
I met similar problem.
Playing Princess Maker 2, with dosbox-x 0.83.13. Save a state in slot 5. Restart Windows 10. Playing Princess Maker 2, with dosbox-x 0.83.13. Load slot 5 state. dosbox-x crash.
But if I sleep Windows 10, it will successfully load. So I cannot restart/shutdown Windows, sleep is ok.

This may be a known issue with certain Windows builds only. According to the earlier experiments by @MX9000, save states in Visual Studio 32-bit SDL1 build and ALL MinGW builds work fine even after a restart or shutdown. On the other hand, they may not work properly in Visual Studio 64-bit builds or Visual Studio 32-bit SDL2 build after a restart or shutdown. So please try the former builds instead for this.

Yes you are right. I just test MinGW version, it's ok.
I came across a problem, when I played Uncharted Waters 2.
Run dosbox-x 0.83.13 MinGW SDL1 64-bit. Enter the game, save a state. load the state. now 1. control player into the building, or 2. use mouse to click right side menu, the game hanged.
I also tried loadfix -a, nothing changed.
Same problem here (compiled from master branch). Looking into a saved file it seams, that there are two zero byte files:
Hi, I've this issue when I try to load a saved state in XCOM UFO Defense: Once the game is opened, I go to "Capture>Load state", and I get the message "machine type mismatch. Load the state anyway?" Then I click on "yes", and get the message "Save state corrupted! Program may not work." Then I click on "accept", and dosbox-x freezes, so I've to close it. I'm not an expert in computers, so I'd like that somebody here helps me with the explanation of this issue at least. I use Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. Thanks!
