I realized that this audio mode is a sound canvas mode based partially on the AWE32 support of the PC version of Final Fantasy VII. The GS soundfonts are not balanced for General MIDI support and sound peculiar in that playback mode. This is a change to an enhanced feature rather than a fundamental one.
What you want
Please make sure that the audio mode is aviable for XCOM: Ufo defense and the sound is commensurate with sound canvas hardware like the SCC-1.
Describe alternatives you've considered
I have tried General MIDI mode. It is mediocre.

general midi depends on the implementation and soundfont you give it. The worst is probably the standard windows midi. FluidSynth is much better with a good soundfont.
