What's the name of the "1984 Accounting Package"? Screenshot? Archive.org or another link, so that others can test/debug?
I'm not sure, but maybe you can just upload it to this issue.
Any errors in the DOSbox-X Log when it hangs?
I guess I need to figure out how to make it start logging. In the configuration file, do I put a path from the host or a path on the guest?
add to your dosbox.conf:
[log] logfile=log.txt
Then run DOSBox-X with the --debug switch.
The software is called BPI and was written by BPI Systems, Inc. version C.13 dated 11/08/84
This link is to the program, but it might be a slightly newer version.
Given that log file, can anybody point me in a trouble shooting direction?
I haven't setup a printer but it boots to the menu, at least.

That's a step farther than me. You downloaded the version from the web? I'm using the version I copied off their old computer.

What is your host? I'm running on Linux.

Well, I showed it in the video, but its on Windows.
Hmmm. That makes me wonder if it is a permissions issue.

Question
Help! My parents still run their company with a DOS accounting package from the 80's and their computer is over 20 years old. I'm trying to move the software to a virtual machine. The host computer is a new System 76 linux box. I've tried to get the software to run on both FreeDOS running on VirtualBox as well as on DosBox-x. The software runs on FreeDos but I can not get printing to work. Printing works on DosBox-x (DIR > LPT1: prints on the printer) but I can't get the software to run. It boots to the splash screen and then hangs there.
Can anybody point me in a direction on how to troubleshoot a program not running on DosBox?
The printer is an Okidata Microline 320.
