GUI plot buttons throw exception #302

On the linux/ubuntu install, clicking the configure subplots button: leads to the following error: And traceback from the console:

Update: this is also true for the "edit axis", and "save figures" buttoms. The others seem to work as intended.

Update 2: no exceptions are thrown when visualizing the alternate plots (spiking for instance). However, the size of the "edit axis" window is extremely awkward:
