Hey Matt I think both ideas are very viable as a final project. It just depends what you are more personally interested in working on. For the second proposal, I'd love to sit down with you sometime or chat over Skype/Google Hangouts to go over some of your ideas. I personally love reading the articles on ESPN and Nate Silver's FiveThirtyEight on sports so you can definitely do those things. One thing I would ask you is where you are getting your data from. Is there an easy way to download it? Or do you need to work with an API?
For the first suggestion, we will certainly be going over how to create a model incorporating several features soon in class. It sounds to me like a regression problem. How are you collecting your data? Are you using a database or are you just given it in a CSV file?
I think though that your second idea will be more interesting and more fun. I actually just came across this recently, but it might be something you'd like to do! I might dabble in this myself as well.
One thing I would recommend is for the next project proposal, first decide on which idea you want to run with. Then include a link to sample data that you have collected for your project. After that write down a bulleted list of the possible ways you can analyze this data / which tools and techniques you are going to use.
