I think this is not ideal because I was using space and shift-space to move up and down the page and unintentionally filled the letter-slots with spaces. Also, it's a bit weird that spaces can be entered into the slots but are invisible. I have prepared a simple pull request that prevents spaces from being entered into letter-slots.
