Midterm Project Expectations

Since your project is lacking the computational data and texts that would be necessary to begin work on XML coding and creating a Schematron your midterm project goals should focus on the following three areas. Note: @ebeshero and I are not saying all of these tasks NEED to be completed by our next class meeting (Tuesday 10/18); however, making strides towards completing these tasks in the next week would be of great benefit to your project as we have reached this mid-semester point.

Here is your mid-term task list:

• [x] create a basic splash page that creatively introduces your project to others
• At this point, you now understand how to create a HTML page (that can include a SSI) and a CSS stylesheet. Since you cannot complete any of the coding work for your texts/data it would be logical for your team to get a start on the code that is behind your website development. I will leave a comment following this one with directions for accessing your project site via your FTP client.
• [x] wire-frame and/or create the shell(s) of other HTML pages on your site.
• By mapping out the other pages on your site you will begin to consider the kinds of things in your project you want to represent visually and thus need to find a way to markup once you do begin textual markup. Wire-framing is basically drawing out what will go where on your site (dividing each page so the narrative or purpose is clear.). For Example: Source: https://signalvnoise.com/posts/466-sketching-with-a-sharpie Pay attention to detail. Think what will be necessary to grab from your texts and data to create these pages. These do not have to be drawn digitally; draw the different pages out on paper and snap an image to share via this repo. Here is another example, from my Nelson project, where we wire-framed what we would like our reading view of the text material to look like.
• As you complete these wire-frames, start creating the basic shells of your other HTML pages (besides your splash page / index.html) that include your navigation options (giving viewers the ability to jump between pages) and general structural divisions. Consider making an About page that describes your project team members and/or the Bush Creek Cemetary. These will all be part of the bigger project in the end so you might as well get a solid start on these tasks while you are waiting for contacts to call back and gathering data/texts.
• [x] Boots on the Ground! I know this is already in the works, but I am putting it here in your mid-term list to emphasize the importance. As we reach this mid-point, we really need to get some kind of data or text to markup. Your plan to photograph the specific section of the Graveyard and typing out the headstone text is a great start. Continue your efforts to make contact with the historical societies and on-site personnel.

Here is how you access your project site via an FTP client:

1. Log in to your FTP client the same way you did to access your personal site.
2. You then need to go up or back two levels of directories. First, get to the directory outside of your personal folder and you will be in the home folder with all of the other user ID folders . Then, go to the directory above that (known as the root directory).
3. From here you need to go down into the var folder, then into the www folder, and then into the html folder.
4. Here you will see your project team folder along with other projects managed under the newtfire.org space. Go into your project folder to create your project website. Note: Most FTP clients will allow you to save this path so you don't need to navigate the directories from your personal website to your project site and vice versa every time you need to make edits. (If you have trouble saving this path meet with one of us or a returning student and we can assist you)
5. Notice when you go into your project team folder @ebeshero has created a temporary index.html page and if you go to your project's newtfire address you can see the generic welcome page. When creating your project splash page replace this index.html file with your new home page (don't forget to set the properties so you and others in your group can Read, Write, Execute and others can Read and Execute).
