v strange the 5000tl is rock solid stable.
anyway - you are getting "bad extracting timestring" so i suspect the date is
somehow not setup correctly or the date format. as it looks right in smatool
you may need to use the sunny explorer software to check its all ok.
for a try, you could revert back to an older version of smatool (say ver 0.8)
if all that fails, please provide a port trace for stephen.

0.8 and 0.9 don't work. I get different errors with them.
I keep getting the "bad extracting timestring", though the one time I didn't
get it I got a "Date Error!" instead.
In the windows Sunny Explorer app, it says I have a SB 5000TL-20 and my
software version is 02.08.01.R. My date format is DD/MM/YYYY and time format is
hh:mm.

I wonder if this is due to my firmware version. I managed to decipher some of
the USB sniff I have done and my inverter has a different code that the 5000TL
that's in the smatools.c. I added the inverter code to match mine but I still
get the same issue.
The above "bad extracting timestring" could be a red herring as there is a
message saying "extracting timestring" later in the process which would
indicate that it's working.

Did you solve your problem?
I have a 5000TL here and we become correct data transmitted.
Are you interested in our .in or .conf files?

I have not had a chance to look at this for a while. I saw another post
somewhere that showed how to read the SMA data but haven't tried myself.
I would be interested to see your .in and .conf files.
What firmware is your inverter?
