Review our design for VIBRATION MODE #136

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
We received a request from an NTT rep (through a Google contact) requesting
that

グリフサンプルについて、日本のオリジナルの「マナーモ
ド」とは全く異なる絵
とし、「VIBRATION
MODE」であることを想起させる絵(ケータイがバイブレーシ

ンしているような絵などにしていただけますでしょうか。

The request is for this glyph to be different from the original Emoji
design and make it look like a vibrating mobile phone.
Does our current glyph satisfy this request? I am not sure if our current
design looks like a vibrating unit. Please review.

I understand the current design (a heart mark overlaid on top of a cell phone)
might not work outside of Japan.
iPhone uses a bell with a diagonal line.

I agree that a heart-over-cell-phone does not work for me, and may not work for
non-
Japanese in general. It looks to me like "I love my cell phone"...

What's a good glyph?

Kida-san says "iPhone uses a bell with a diagonal line"

Some of the image search results for Clip Art with "cell phone vibration mode"
show
round "forbidden" traffic signs over a cell phone:
http://images.google.com/images?
q=cell+phone+vibration+mode&gbv=2&hl=en&imgtype=clipart
(I like the results here better if I _don't_ restrict the search to only small
images.)

Opinions/ideas?

For me the "forbidden" traffic signs looks as if cell phones are completely
prohibited like as in an airplane
though.

How about a cell phone, with, next to it, a "forbidden" sign over a bell?

That works for me.

Peter (Max), do you have an idea?

The bell with a slashed circle over it is the clearest symbol I've seen.

I agree, but I am afraid that by itself it won't be recognized as cell phone
specific.

Do you agree with that design _combined with_ a cell phone in the same glyph?
(I
would put the cell phone on the left and the no-bell thing on the right.)

My US mobile phone shows an image of

the cell phone and on each side of it a vertical wavy line that covers the
entire
length of the phone unit (except the antenna part).

That is one possible design.

I am ok with Kat's suggestion too. Peter Lofting, could you please take a stab
at
redesigning this one?

There are two design proposals on this thread: [1] slashed bell; [2] phone with
wavy lines around it.
In 1.0d5 I've done a cell phone with a slashed bell on the right.
