Surely this should all be in the css - isnt that what the _variables.css is for?

No, this is the "calculation" of the params values you can set in the template style, that has nothing to do with SCSS, it's pue PHP.

I wont pretend that I am able to understand this code but I can confirm that everything works the same as it did before
