Can you please provide a screenshot of the error message
That doesnt look to me like an error message that Joomla would generate
I get this error message on all websites. I have websites at 4 different hosts, so that's why I don't think it is a host problem?
It's probably coming from here:
Maybe because you have Akeeba Backup installed.
Maybe because you have Akeeba Backup installed.
I have it installed on all sites so thats not the cause
I uninstalled Akeeba and tried again, but the same error appears.
Can you try to upload the file?
Using this method: https://docs.joomla.org/J3.x:Upgrading_from_Joomla_3.4.x_to_3.5/en#Update_when_you_can.27t_use_the_Joomla.21_Update_component
just only some ideas. If relevant, I don't know.
Should be in this way: public $live_site = ''; public $ftp_user = ''; public $ftp_pass = ''; Btw: check also extensions. Seems they are outdated. Template, JCE etc. There is also no need to uninstall Akeeba. But maybe to de-active: backuponupdate before updating Joomla.
What happens if you set short_open_tag to false in your php.ini?

I don't think I can access php.ini on the host server?

Trying another website, everything updated and live_site/ftp_user/ftp_pass as you mentioned. Still no luck.

You can put an own php.ini or .user.ini into the Joomla folder to override the settings from the provider‘s ini. For detail about php.ini files or user.ini files please check PHP documentation.
@apelsinskal can you please try the update by hand https://docs.joomla.org/J3.x:Upgrading_from_Joomla_3.4.x_to_3.5/en#Update_when_you_can.27t_use_the_Joomla.21_Update_component

I click install, and then I get the same error message.
hmm... could you please try to upgrade to 3.9.12?

I have version 3.9.12
Because I see a 2FA field in the screenshot. Perhaps it has something to do with it?
I've tested twice updates 3.9.11 to 3.9.13 and had no issues but I don't use 2FA.

I don't use 2FA, it is disabled.
