how marketing can communicate with other project teams and the community. #1

We need to better define how marketing can communicate with other project teams and the community.

We created a Skype Chat called "Joomla! Marketing Chat". It was the easiest solution so far, but lacks openness to the community.

Other communication channels I found:

https://github.com/joomla/joomla-marketing https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/joomla-marketing http://forum.joomla.org/viewforum.php?f=699 Should we maintain all 3 of these? There is no such thing as a bad idea or suggestion. Please suggest ideas on how our communication channels can improve:)

We also have the page on the Joomla Documentation which we could use to provide information on how people can get involved:

http://docs.joomla.org/Marketing

My thoughts on your question as to whether we maintain all the communication channels we currently have are that it depends on what you wish to achieve.

If we wish to be as diverse as possible in regards to giving people the opportunity to be involved, then we should have as many incoming channels open as we are able to maintain. At present we have a range of channels where people can reach out in the way they feel most confident with.

The Marketing Chat is also a good way for people to be involved as and when they can, however it is also off-putting to some due to the amount of chatter and the sheer volume of messages that buzz around, especially at high-demand times such as in the run-up to a release. It is also an issue, in my opinion, that the discussions that have happened previously cannot be seen by new joiners, and none of the conversations are public. That being said, with the volume of communication that goes on in the chat room, having that going via an email-based newsgroup would quickly become overwhelming.

I think we should consider having a slightly less wide-reaching method for people to request marketing support, so that in effect there is a single point of entry for requests, to ensure that they are not missed - so perhaps we make one of these methods the 'preferred' route for requesting marketing input - or something like a form through which requests can be made.

In terms of communicating and liaising with other project teams and the community, let's break that down a bit:

Other project teams My thoughts on this are that the Marketing Working Group will go some way to help this. I think that the minutes from Marketing Working Group meetings should be made available publicly, perhaps on community.joomla.org or on the Docs area? This would help with transparency and communication. Having representation from the leadership teams and OSM will also be a route to pass information to other teams.

The community The marketing chat is a great way to start with involving the community, however we also need to ensure that the wider community are involved in our marketing efforts. This has been a key focus on the recent Marketing Request for Proposals and I am hopeful that it will help us establish good practice in this area.

I think we need to be clear what we mean by 'communicate with the community' - communicate about what? If we're meaning communicate about the work the Marketing team are doing, then sharing the agendas publicly and communicating via blog posts as appropriate will help there. If we're referring to communicating with the community about important aspects such as new releases, important developments and such like, then this should be something that the Marketing Working Group could focus on developing a clear pathway of communication which helps others in the Joomla project understand what the Marketing team can do to help support them in getting their message out to the community.

Sorry for the long response ^_=

Ruth, I think you make some very good points. In my opinion all of these channels have a purpose and value to the communication chain. I think this (git) could be a good place for discussion for general longer winded opinions such as what you just posted where you have the freedom to articulate a clear set of ideas. The chat should be for more real time needs for communicating to the channel of folks that want to stay listening to the chatter and where we reach out to folks quickly. Perhaps in this chat we should change some of the ground rules. For example; I am in a RT group where we specifically ask folks to take conversations off to private chats to make it easier to follow the key content the group is pushing out without sifting through too much chatter. With that said it is also a nice place to meet folks and make new members feel welcome as they connect to this part of the community.

I still like the idea of Basecamp for PM if chosen. Basecamp could be a more efficient and effective place for task force teams supporting specific initiatives or campaigns.

The long and short of it though is that this is all good stuff to nail down so we can all know the best way and place to communicate.
