Achievements could increase score, give research points, or unlock new modes in multiplayer.

What type of achievements are we talking about?

Achievements tend to be a one-time reward system. "Look at the progress I've made". Steam achievements, xbox achievements, ps4 trophies are prime examples of the current state of achievements.

I think they're a good idea in the long term, but not for this sprint.

I think we should have both in-game and equivalent achievements on steam much like stardew value.

One game I enjoyed simply because of the achievements was Sproggiwood a very well done roguelike.

That game had a lot more content due to the achievements, and I kept coming back just for the achievements.

I don't think RCS is set up enough like a roguelike to copy what they did. But we can try and aim for a small set of maybe 15 achievements.

Each set of 5 achievements can unlock a new skin in the game.

A. Pizza Mode B. Old School Retro C. Crazy Kittens

  1. Beat the campaign - also unlock the lovejam
  2. Beat your friend in skirmish 5 times
  3. Play through the campaign and don't lose more 20 ships
  4. Play co-op with a friend in skirmish 5 times
  5. Beat the hardest AI level
  6. Build 100 scouts
  7. Write 10 words in chat
  8. Capture 3 ships with troopships
  9. Only use keyboard shortcuts one game
  10. Take over 50 ships using troopships
  11. Destroy 10,000 enemies (adds up all games)
  12. Complete lovejam
  13. Unlock all research
  14. Play Pizza Mode
  15. Complete all other achievements.

Now I can work on icons for all these. I think we should have an achievement age option on the title screen.

All the icons will be in a grid of 3x5 and on hover it will say either "hidden" or unlocked and what you achieved.

These achievements are mere suggestions. I see the purpose of achievements is to push the player to try new things, finish things or try something unorthodox to see more game content.
