It seems that the commit a37552c7bd4e5ac8606f0cf26aa7ade310a1bc38 deletes the footnote message "To whom correspondence should be addressed" although the * is still present.

Yes, that's correct: they no longer put the footnote. Corresponding authors are still marked with a star.
