Develop a reasonable approach for applying 3-D regularization based on the physical kernel arguments from Sale et al. and others. Ad hoc kernels also permitted.

This has now taken shape and will be implemented as part of my thesis. Hopefully working code with idealized results will be implemented in a few months, with other results to follow shortly.

Closing since this doesn't describe any specific features to be implemented as of now. Will open smaller issues with action items in the future.
