yes, I should think about re-layouting the README.md file to be more readable and point to the relevant pages on the wiki. I'll do this after release 1.0

Done:

re-designed the wiki layout; added and moved around information and made overviews.
re-designed the README.md to be minimal and have a good looking overview with pointers to the relevant wiki pages
I didn't repeat the dependency overview in the README, rather I included a pointer to the wiki page

todo:

as always: the wiki isn't complete and can be lay outed better --> feel free to enhance...

I'll close this issue for now; if anyone wants to enhance the README.md file (to be more clear e.g.) --> re-open this issue and make a pull request
