icons barely visible due to a lack of a background element #7

Is there anyway I can use css to add a small background to the icons to make them more visible with my background? Right now they are barely visible due to my background

By default these should have a background, are you using a gtk theme or any custom css?

I'm using the gtk theme Graphite-Light. Even when I change my CSS to be empty, I still get the same result.
