Courtesy of Andrew Pullen:

I just called the Opal customer care centre and enquired about the new Opal Youth card.

I was told that I could link my children's cards to my current card but had to have $20 deposit per child added to the account.

This means that if I have 4 children and 2 adults I have to have a minimum of $160 on my Opal account.

I also enquired about if the current "Family Fare Deal" applies to the Opal card

Currently on all government public transport (Trains, Ferries and Buses) Monday to Saturday all family adults pay but only 1 child pays a fare the remaining children travel free.

I was told by the the operator that this does not apply to the Opal card and that each child would have to have a separate Opal card and pay a fare.

This means that if a mum with 3 children and wanted to go a few stops up to the shops on the bus she would have to pay:

Opal Card $2.10 + $1.05 + $1.05 + $1.05 = $5.25

Paper Ticket $2.30 + $1.10 = $3.30

TravelTen Ticket $1.84 + $0.88 = $2.72

She would be $2.52 worse off on the Opal card just going a few stops and have to have a $100.00 deposit on the Opal Card compared to only needed to outlay $27.20 on two TravelTen tickets.

Just another cost comparison showing Opal is double the cost of TravelTen tickets for a family.

Ferry journey Parramatta to the city 1 mother plus 3 kids.

Opal Card Adult $7.00 + 3 children 3x $3.50 = $17.50

Paper Ticket Adult $7.40 + 1 Child 1x $3.70 = $11.10

TravelTen Adult $5.92 + 1 child 1x $2.96 = $8.88

Stay in the city for more than 1 hour then come home will cost you

Opal Card $35.00

Paper Ticket $22.20

TravelTen $17.76

So to travel to the city on the river cat Monday to Saturday will be half price with TravelTen tickets for a family.

Train trip, Woodford to Homebush return, old paper tickets: family fare for 1 adult and four children = one adult and one child off peak return $11.80 + $5.90 = 17.70 Opal system = 1 adult $15, 4 children $7.50 = $45. 254% increase. Ooops! I stuffed this up. Opal off peak fares make it 5.67 each way for an adult, 2.83 for a child, so only 11.34 + 4x5.66 = $33.98 Only a 191% increase.
