Known Issues & Notes Game will reach a screen with online setup, if you cancel it, you'll reach a black screen with high fps and hang there forever. Upon restarting the emulation, a "No HDD found" error message is shown instead

As a side note, this game require a HDD unit to work. It would be nice to add a compat label for games that require/support the HDD.

Should at least show the warning screen right now.

The FFXI Online service for PS2 has been shut down since 2016. Mind that this is an MMO and has no offline / single player mode, so it's no longer playable on real hardware either, so it should be least concern for emulation.

Side note: If you just wish to play this MMO and don't care about platform, the PC version is still available and its servers are still up.
