I hope wordthumb/timthumb would eventually be able to detect thumbnails for 
videos as well :)

This is not so hard because Youtube have something like this 
http://img.youtube.com/vi/HwP5NG-3e8I/hqdefault.jpg, so you just change that 
weird code, and Vimeo have API for that and here is how to use it in PHP

I would suggest that this would be a feature of your software (theme or 
website) and not of TimThumb. As mentioned above most video sites have a 
thumbnail feature and so using their apis yourself would be the best way to do 
this.
