Consider allowing saving/loading. We could make another state for this (a screen that allows you to select a save slot) or just have all saving/loading be done on the same slot.
I imagine that this could kill the difficulty level unless it was restricted in some way. There may be "save" powerups that grant you the ability to save your game once, for example. Or, like Metroid or Castlevania SotN, stationary save spots.
