Option to Hide Menubar Widget Unless Required #317

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What feature or enhancement do you propose?
Quite simply I'd like to see some options for controlling the Growl menubar
widget, specifically I'd like to see three options:
 - Always Visible
 - As Required
 - Never Visible

This will allow a user to have the menubar widget if desired either all the
time, or none of the time.

The more interesting case however is "As Required", in which case the widget
will only appear if the user has history enabled, and new items are available.
In this case the widget can be pressed to view, and then choose "Dismiss" to
hide it until more new history arrives or, optionally, simply opening the menu
could be enough to dismiss it once you allow it to close.

What problem does it solve/What benefit does it provide?
It reduces the clutter that can quickly be accumulated with multiple
applications that use menubar widgets, and keeps Growl as a purely "background"
process unless desired or needed.

Just a note to say that this would go well with Issue #316, as it can serve as
an additional visual cue.

We're not going to make the menu item on demand.

Any reason why not? I don't really want it visible all the time as I don't have
a huge number of Growl notifications, so it's just unnecessary clutter, but I
wouldn't like to have it hidden all the time as it's a nice neat indicator of
new history.

If there's a difficult technical reason then fine, but otherwise I don't think
it should just be dismissed.

i think you should be able to hide the growl menubar as well, because i have
loads of menubar icons and they can all hide them and its the only one that
cant be hidden!

I'm guessing because there is no alternative if it has to abide by the Mac App
Store rules. I would like to hid it as well, but seeing as its probably not
going to happen I'm going to try and live without it for a while. My menubar
needs to be clean :( (heh, slight OCD there I guess)

This ticket is a duplicate of 296. 296 is closed as fixed. :)

This issue isn't strictly a duplicate, due to the requirement item, allowing to
only appear on demand rather than be either on or off and nothing in between.

That's fixed too.
