Hardware Growler says on UPS when actually on AC #327

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 8 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 8 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?
1.Reboot the iMac
2.Restart Hardware Growler

What is the expected output?
Should say "On AC power" or maybe nothing.

What do you see instead?
Display says on "UPS Power".

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

Hardware Growler 1.3b1 and Growl 1.3 OSX Lion 10.7.2 on a 8,1 iMac with 6 GB
Ram 24" with and external display.

Please provide any additional information below.

I have done additional research into this problem to see if it is limited to
just the iMac, and it is! I did the following to prove this.
1. Plugged my MacBook Pro into the UPS
2. Booted the MacBook pro

The expected output was as expected "On A/C power then when I unplugged the
chord it said "On Battery Power" then replugged and recevied "Power Status
Change on A/C Power"

So I received no "On UPS Power as I do on the iMac. So my theory is correct it
is related to the iMac with built in power supply and the UPS. I have rebooted
the iMac many times and still get on "UPS Power"

I think I figured out what causes the problem on the iMac, but not a way to fix
it. The cause is that the APC UPS is connected to the iMac via USB and there is
a delay in polling of the USB port so it lags behind Hardware Growler sending
out notifications. So to make it simple Hardware Growler sees the iMac on UPS
because the iMac didn't poll the UPS fast enough. Maybe if there was a delay in
Hardware Growler reading power status to the end then this would not happen.

Not sure what else I can provide, other than it seems like a defect.

I don't think we need anything else for now.

It's not going to be worked on for 1.3. We'll prioritize it towards a later
release though. Thanks Joel. :)

retest using beta 2 and confirm if [a6cf7c0d54e8] fixed it.

Installed Hardware Growler Beta 2 and UPS problems are still present but in a
different way. Today I contacted APC my UPS manufacturer support and together
we put the UPS on battery power via test mode. Alerts from Growl were not seen
but alerts from OSX 10.7.2 power preferences was seen. There was also no Growl
alert when returning to AC Power.
