pub/private key encryption, where clients sign each request with a public key?
"standard" API auth token? (how do people usually implement/handle api auth tokens?)
something else?

questions to answer re: api tokens:

        how do people usually do this? just an opaque token that lives in a db table?
        how are these usually generated?
        how are these usually distributed?
